Srinagar, June 25 (KMW): Two teenagers were killed and five other injured when CRPF opened fire on demonstrators protesting the killing of a suspected militant in an encounter in Sopore town of north Kashmir some 50 kilometres (31 miles) north of Srinagar, the summer capital of the insurgency-racked region. this evening, police said. The victims were identified as 15-year-old Shakeel Ahmad Ganai and Firdous Ahmad.Police said the trouble started when local residents took out a procession and pelted stones on CRPF vehicles who were returning after a day-long gun battle with militants at Bagh-i-islam Krankshivan area of the town where two guerrillas of Laskar-e-Taiba (LeT) were killed and two security men injured in a gunfight. The locals claimed one of the two persons killed in the encounter was a civilian. Police said the section of the mob pelted stones on CRPF vehicles, after which the paramilitary personnel opened fire, resulting in injuries to five persons. High tension has gripped Sopore town in the wake of this incident and additional deployments of CRPF and police have been sent to maintain law and order there.Sopore has been a hotbed of separatist violence since 1990s when the present separatist armed campaign started in Kashmir.
